Programs

Starfish is committed to giving our kids the tools to succeed in life. Each of our programs is designed to do just that. To sponsor or volunteer for one of these programs, visit this page.

High School Workforce Program

Summer 2017 Starfish invited the youth of our neighborhood to our new Ascending Leaders program. Ascending Leaders provided an array of on-going daily and weekly work force activities and opportunities for our high school students to develop as future professionals teaching them leadership, work ethic, professional responsibility, and much more.

Mentoring

Many of our students come from single family homes with parents largely absent due to work and other commitments. In a study cited by fatherhoodfactor.com, individuals from father-absent homes were found to be 279% more likely to carry guns and deal drugs than peers living with their fathers. The presence of a dad is necessary for complete emotional development. Females need the security provided by their dad to properly navigate future male relationships. Starfish staff seek to meet our students with this keen need by providing direction and godly instruction. Daily Bible studies as well as hang-out time during the program and outings and events are perfect opportunities for us to pour into our kids.

Tutoring

Only 26% of students at the local elementary school meet state standards for reading, with only 13% meeting standards for math. At Starfish last year, 79% of our students passed reading while 39% maintained a B average in reading throughout the year. Sixty-four percent surpassed math standards while 43% maintained a B average in math throughout the year. Starfish continues to provide our students with the tools to succeed academically by providing homework help as well as supplemental curriculum in the form of paper worksheets and online educational software such as ThinkCerca.

Ministry (Evangelism & Discipleship)

During our daily Bible study time, our students learn the Word of God as it applies to their lives. Our kids are exposed to different ministries and churches through multimedia at the center as well as various outings and events that connect them with other Christians. We have connected our kids with local food and clothing pantries, as well as numerous out-of-state opportunities to serve other people. Our goal is to model Christ in a way that deeply impacts their lives.

Arts & Crafts

Our goal is to give our kids the chance to grow in every aspect of life, including developing their inner artist through art class. Starfish has hosted numerous volunteers who have shared their gifts with the students and taught them how to cultivate different skills.

Fitness & Nutrition

Obesity is a major problem for many of the youth in our cities. At Starfish we understand the importance of fitness and nutrition to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In addition to regular teaching about making healthy diet choices, Starfish provides healthy snacks as well as opportunities for learning to cook new and exciting dishes. Starfish engages youth in 30 minutes a day of physical activity to encourage them to adopt an active lifestyle. The kids enjoy soccer, baseball and football outdoors, or their favorite indoor activity: dodgeball.

Home Economics

Part of giving our kids the tools to succeed is teaching them to know their way around a kitchen! Students at Starfish are given the opportunity to learn how to cook, as well as other handy Home Ec skills such as cleaning, building/assembling things, personal finance, and more.
