January and December reflections

December brought fun and excitement with an outing for the girls downtown complete with delicious food and shopping! Starfish never misses and opportunity to let our kids know they are special and loved. Our annual Christmas party was no exception, where thanks to those who donated to our Facebook fundraiser, we were able to provide all our kids with presents off their Christmas wish list. We have much to be thankful for!

In January we collaborated with UR Chicago Alliance, Park Community Church, and C/24/7 Father’s Arms Ministry and hosted a Fortnite party for area youth. Kids came and enjoyed food, heard a presentation of the gospel, and played Fornite, a popular online video game. Participants faced each other in a tournament. The event was a success, and Starfish enjoyed the opportunity to interface with other organizations in the community as well as the youth themselves.

Exciting Events and Activities Coming Right up!

Our field trip program is in full swing. The outings we have planned include a trip to the DuSable Museum of African American Art, Blue Man Group, ice skating at Skatium ice rink in Skokie, a Lecrae concert, ifly indoor skydiving, and the art museum at Loyola university. Our goal is to expose our kids to cultural, educational, and recreational experiences to broaden their perspectives and positively shape their worldview. Special outings and events also provide opportunities for our staff to mentor and speak into the lives of our youth outside of regular programming.

On another note, planning for our summer retreat has already begun! For over ten years Starfish has taken kids on a ten-day retreat to Michigan to experience fun activities and day trips to Midwestern museums and attractions. This trip is something kids and staff alike always look forward to as the highlight of the year, and we can’t wait to see what adventures this year’s retreat will bring.

Starfish is hiring

At the time of this post publication, we are still looking to hire a tutor for our after school program. If you or someone you know is interested in the position, please check out our job openings page to view details and apply.

Prayer requests

Please keep our students in prayer. Most kids in our neighborhood face violence and gang influences on a regular basis. They need healthy role models and wisdom to make good choices. Please also pray for wisdom for our program staff in guiding the kids through difficult situations and for discernment for Starfish leadership in making decisions that affect the organization.
